A Little Women Content Wrap Up

 Little Women is featured in S 3 Episode 13 of Friends The One Where Monica And Richard Are Just Friends in the B plot where Rachel and Joey exchange books, Joey reads Little Women and Rachel reads  The Shining by Stephen King. 


This is my fourth time reading Little Women  previosuly having read it in 2020, 2022 and 2024 respectively.  It's a cosy book to read  in the winter since the beginning is set at Christmas time.  The March sister I relate to the most is  Jo because she is a  writer and Beth because she loves music.  I  do not like  the love triagle between Amy, Jo and Laurey ... it drives me absolutely nuts.  Matt, Kathleen and I saw the musical at Portland Players on Sunday afternoon.   The set and costume design for this production was lovely.My favorite songs are Astonishing Five Forever, Off  To Massachuetts  Some Things Are Meant To Be and The Fire In Me. Notable performances were by Kelly Mosher ( Jo March),  Caroline Chung ( Beth March),  Holly Dalton Spencer ( Marmee March) and R.Tyler Kruse ( Laurie) but the whole cast was incredibly talented.

A modern retealling of  Little Women  I read  was  Hello Beautiful   by Ann Napolitano, Napolitano does a fantastic job bringing Little Women to life for modern day audieces.  In this book Jo''s character is named Julia and she is a journalist  at a magazine.  The death of Beth's character Sophie is equally as sad as it is in the original book.

I also read a new mystery book that just came out called Beth Is Dead which turns Beth's death into a murder mystery in which all her sisters and a few family friends are turned into suspects.

A book that descibes  a character from Little Women is A Man Called Ove by Friederick Bachman.  This book was one of my top books books at 2023.   Ove's neighbor  Sonja is definitely a modern representation of Beth March.   The Gilmore Girls character that Ove's character is most similar to is Luke only aged up by 20 years.   Matt and I saw the film  adaptation of A Man Called Ove in  2023 before we moved away from NH and it is one of Tom Hanks's best performances.

A book  I read in December 2025  choc full of Jane Austen chracter references is the Jane Austin Book Club by Natalie Jenner.  While I enjoyed this author's writing style  the character were not enjoyable to read from and the pacing was too slow

The most interesting part  of this book was the section about modern characters that describe Jo March.  Rory Gilmore is one of them.

A Man Called Ove 9/10 stars on IMDB

Little Women  8/10 We watched the 1994 version of the movie which stars Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder and Kirsten Dunst.  The scenery and costumes were great and so was the choreography in the ballroom scene.The scene where Beth  dies is heartbreaking.  We also enjoyed the 2019 remake directed by Greta Gerwig.

Hi Everyone, Summer has kept me busy  so I figured I'd take this opportunity to talk about some books  in the past couple  months First up is A Thousand Splendid Suns  by  Kahleed Hussieni. Emma. A TV/Book/Film Comparison

  Much like Pride and Prejudice what I liked the best about Emma was the atmosphere in London. I felt like I was traveling back to the 1800s.  The 1996 TV movie also has a very picturesque setting that made feel like I was in a place I have never been.    With Clueless I love how Amy Heckerling modernized Emma for the 1990s generation with Cher Horowitz who was played by Alicia Silverstone in  the lead role.  In Clueless I loved how Cher and Dionne played matchmaker with their teachers. I thought the dynamic between the relationship between the two teachers was adorable.   As If An Oral History of Clueless provided nice insigt into the making of the film. My favorite part of this book was when they talked about the costume design.  One thing I did not like about Clueless was how  Cher develops a crush on her step brother  Josh who was played by Paul Rudd.   Matt and I also watched the episode from  the TV show One For The Ro...

Looking for a good summer read? Happy Place is it

 Happy Place by Emily Henry centers around a group of college friends who are at their last summer getaway at their friend Sabrina’s summer home in Knot’s Harbor, Maine. This is a multi point of view story where past POVs focus on the group’s adventures and the present day POV  focuses on the fact that our main characters Wyn and Harriet are trying to hide the fact thar their engagement has been broken off from the rest of their friends. I come to this book for the Maine setting and the vibes this group of friends has with each-other, it very much reminds me of the friend group that I had  when I lived in New Hampshire. The constant miscommunication between Wyn and Harriet drives me completely insane and made me want to DNF with each reread. Out of all the characters in the friend group the person I found myself relating to is Sabrina.
